El Salvador deepens its presence in the largest Bitcoin payment network


A new node of the Bitcoin Lightning network was activated in El Salvador. It corresponds to TorogozDev, an academy founded in 2022 to train Bitcoin developers and professionals in the country.

The milestone, announced in networks by the academy itself, is part of TorogozDev’s program to promote the use and understanding of Bitcoin in El Salvador, where the cryptocurrency has been legal tender since September 2021. TorogozDev is non-profit and focuses on providing technical training in Bitcoin and Lightning Network development. The courses are between 6 and 8 weeks long.

The TorogozDev node becomes the fourth active in El Salvador, according to data from mempool.space. The total capacity that the nodes in that country provide for the instant and low-cost sending of bitcoin is 5.13 BTC. It is equivalent to 0.03% of total Lightning liquidity.

The node, released to the public on February 14, It is sponsored by the Bitfinex exchange, which collaborates financially with the educational entity to promote bitcoin adoption. The alliance between the parties occurred in 2023, in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin whitepaper, as reported in CriptoNoticias.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Bitfinex, highlighted that the launch of the node “is not only a technological advance, but also a step forward in realizing the true potential of borderless money in a nation that has boldly integrated Bitcoin into its financial system.”

Ishi Kawa, co-founder of TorogozDev, highlighted the importance of the new Lightning node in advancing its mission of helping businesses and users accept and make payments with Bitcoin. Additionally, he noted the desire to facilitate access to local talent and professionals to promote the adoption of Bitcoin in El Salvador.
